Is itching normal after blepharoplasty?
General information about typical recovery, not medical advice. Every eye and every surgery is different, and your surgeon's instructions override anything on this page. Read our full disclaimer.
Short answer
Yes. Itching around healing incisions and dry, irritated eyes is common. The important rule is not to rub or scratch the lids while they are healing.
What's normal
ASPS notes that initial healing after eyelid surgery may include swelling, bruising, irritation, dry eyes, and discomfort, and that irritation at the incision sites is also possible. Itching is part of that irritation, and it often ramps up as the incision moves from raw to healing.
Dryness feeds it. StatPearls lists dry eye as a common complication after upper blepharoplasty with many patients needing daytime drops and nighttime lubricating ointment, and a dry surface itches. EyeWiki lists topical lubrication with artificial tears and a nighttime gel or ointment as needed.
Returning sensation adds a layer. Numbness typically resolves over 2 to 4 months per AAO, and nerves coming back often feel itchy or prickly on the way. Cool compresses help. ASOPRS notes cold compresses are applied to reduce swelling and bruising, and that warm compresses are used after several days.
Often starts around days 3 to 7 as the incision heals and can come and go for several weeks.
When it stops being normal
Itching with spreading redness, warmth, swelling that is increasing, discharge, or fever suggests infection, which AAO lists among the possible complications of eyelid surgery. Call the same day.
Sudden intense itching with a new rash or hives after starting a prescribed ointment could be a reaction to the medication. Stop guessing and call your surgeon rather than switching products on your own. Never rub or scratch a healing eyelid, since that can pull an incision open.
