That does not make heavy drinking a good idea in the first week. Alcohol is dehydrating and can worsen the dry, gritty feeling that is common in early recovery, and StatPearls notes that patients are typically on antibiotic, steroid, or anti inflammatory drops for one to four weeks after surgery. Missing doses because of a late night is a real risk.

Alcohol can also interact with pain medicine, sleep aids, and other prescriptions you may have been given around the procedure. If you were sent home with anything beyond eye drops, ask the office specifically before drinking.

White or yellow discharge on or inside the eyelid, or thick crusting discharge from the eye
A sudden burst of new floaters, new flashes of light, or a shadow or curtain moving across your side vision, which can mean a retinal detachment
Nausea or vomiting together with eye pain, which can go with raised pressure inside the eye
Any eye injury, or accidentally being poked or hit in the operated eye
Blurriness that has not started to subside after about a week
Vision that had cleared and then gradually clouds over again weeks, months, or years later

These warning signs after cataract surgery can point to problems that need same-day care. Do not wait for your next scheduled visit. If you cannot reach your surgeon's office, use their on-call line, or go to an emergency room.
