When can I swim after a corneal transplant?
General information about typical recovery, not medical advice. Every eye and every surgery is different, and your surgeon's instructions override anything on this page. Read our full disclaimer.
Short answer
Not in the early weeks, and only when your surgeon clears you. Water in a healing eye is an infection risk, and the Academy restricts swimming for weeks after other eye surgeries for exactly that reason.
The Academy's guidance on returning to exercise after eye surgery explains the principle plainly: water can cause infection or irritate the eye, so swimming in any type of water is restricted after eye surgery, for up to about four weeks after cataract surgery, at least two weeks after LASIK, and one to two weeks after most retinal surgery. The Academy does not publish a swimming number specific to corneal transplant, which is why this one has to come from your own surgeon.
A corneal transplant leaves a wound on the surface of the eye, and with a full thickness graft that wound is held by stitches for months. An exposed suture can act as a track for bacteria. That makes pools, lakes, oceans, and hot tubs a genuine infection risk, not just a comfort issue.
When you are cleared, well fitted goggles help keep water out. Do not use goggles as a workaround to swim earlier than your surgeon allows.
| When | Typical guidance |
|---|---|
| First weeks | No swimming, hot tubs, or letting water get in the eye. |
| Comparable eye surgeries | AAO restricts swimming up to 4 weeks after cataract surgery and at least 2 weeks after LASIK. |
| After a corneal transplant | No published fixed number; your surgeon sets it based on the wound and stitches. |
| Once cleared | Use goggles and avoid poorly maintained water. |
