When can I lift heavy things after retinal detachment surgery?

General information about typical recovery, not medical advice. Every eye and every surgery is different, and your surgeon's instructions override anything on this page. Read our full disclaimer.

Short answer

Most surgeons limit lifting for several weeks. There is no universal published weight limit, so get your number from your surgeon.

AAO advises limited activity for several weeks after surgery for a detached retina, and says your ophthalmologist will tell you when to return to normal activities. Heavy lifting sits inside that limit for most surgeons.

The concern is eye pressure and stress on a healing repair. StatPearls describes raised intraocular pressure as a recognized complication of gas tamponade, from overfill or bubble expansion. Straining pushes pressure up throughout the body, the eye included.

After a scleral buckle there is also the band itself. StatPearls notes that buckle extrusion presents with pain, redness, and discharge and may require removal of the implant, so anything that strains or bumps the eye area early on is worth avoiding.

Ask your surgeon for a specific weight limit and a specific date. If you lift for work, ask them to put it in writing.

WhenTypical guidance
First weekAvoid heavy lifting entirely. Focus on positioning and drops.
Weeks 2 to 4Still limited for most patients. Ask for a specific weight limit.
After several weeksAAO frames the limit as several weeks; your surgeon confirms when to lift normally.
