Why is my vision not better yet after YAG capsulotomy?

What's normal

On the day of the laser almost nobody sees well, because the pupil is dilated and gel was used on the eye. The real check-in point is the next day or two. The AAO states that if you have no other eye problems affecting your vision, your sight should improve in about 48 hours, and an AAO ophthalmologist writes that a capsulotomy will usually improve vision by the next day. The National Eye Institute describes vision back to normal in a few days.

The wording in all of those sources is doing real work. Clearing the cloudy capsule only fixes the cloudy capsule. If something else is also limiting your vision, such as macular degeneration, diabetic retinal changes, glaucoma damage, or a dry eye surface, the laser will not improve that part. The AAO's clinical guidance reports that roughly 83 to 96 percent of eyes gain visual acuity after the procedure, which means a real minority do not, usually because of another condition.

Most people improve by the next morning and around 48 hours; no improvement past that point is worth a call.

When it stops being normal

Call your ophthalmologist if you are past about 48 hours with no improvement at all, if vision improved and then got worse, or if you are having pain along with the blur. There is a treatable reason worth finding in most of those cases, and it is not something to sit on for weeks.

Sudden vision loss, a gray or dark curtain moving across your field of vision, a shadow in your side vision, flashes, or a shower of floaters need same-day contact. The AAO instructs patients to call their ophthalmologist immediately for changes that suggest retinal detachment, and says a detached retina has to be examined right away.
