When can I drive after trabeculectomy?
General information about typical recovery, not medical advice. Every eye and every surgery is different, and your surgeon's instructions override anything on this page. Read our full disclaimer.
Short answer
Not on surgery day, and not until your surgeon says your vision is safe. The Glaucoma Research Foundation advises avoiding driving during recovery.
The American Academy of Ophthalmology says you should plan to have someone drive you home after trabeculectomy, and you may have a patch on the eye overnight. So surgery day is out.
After that there is no fixed number of days, and that is not an accident. The Glaucoma Research Foundation lists driving among the things to take a break from while you recover from incisional glaucoma surgery, alongside reading, bending, and strenuous exercise. Vision in the operated eye is the limiting factor, and the American Academy of Ophthalmology says vision may be blurry for several weeks.
Practically, this means your surgeon decides. If your other eye sees well and the operated eye is only blurry, some people are cleared early. If both eyes have advanced glaucoma damage, the conversation is different and may involve a formal vision check. Ask directly at your one week visit rather than guessing, and remember that US state licensing standards for vision also apply.
| When | Typical guidance |
|---|---|
| Surgery day | Do not drive. Arrange for someone to take you home. |
| First week | Glaucoma Research Foundation advice is to take a break from driving while recovering. |
| Weeks 2 to 6 | Vision may still be blurry per AAO. Drive only if your surgeon has cleared you. |
| After 6 to 8 weeks | Vision has usually settled enough for a new glasses prescription per AAO, which is often when driving is comfortable again. |
