When can I read and use screens after trabeculectomy?

Short answer
The Glaucoma Research Foundation advises taking a break from reading early on. Screens do not damage the eye, but blurry vision limits comfort for weeks.
The Glaucoma Research Foundation lists reading among the things to take a break from while recovering from incisional glaucoma surgery, alongside driving, bending, and strenuous exercise. That advice is about the early recovery period, not forever.
Screens and books do not harm a healing trabeculectomy the way bending and straining can. What limits you is vision. The American Academy of Ophthalmology says vision may be blurry for several weeks after trabeculectomy, and the Glaucoma Research Foundation describes blurred vision for about six weeks before it usually returns to its previous level.
Two practical points. Sustained near work makes any eye feel dry and tired, which is worse when you are also on frequent drops, so take breaks and blink. And do not buy new glasses to fix the blur. The American Academy of Ophthalmology says a new prescription is usually measured once the eye has healed, often around 6 to 8 weeks, because the numbers can keep changing before then.
| When | Typical guidance |
|---|---|
| First week | GRF advises taking a break from reading during early recovery. |
| Weeks 2 to 6 | Read and use screens as comfort allows. Vision is often still blurry per AAO and GRF. |
| 6 to 8 weeks | AAO says a new eyeglass prescription is usually measured once the eye has healed, often at 6 to 8 weeks. |
