When can I go back to work after trabeculectomy?
General information about typical recovery, not medical advice. Every eye and every surgery is different, and your surgeon's instructions override anything on this page. Read our full disclaimer.
Short answer
Desk work is often possible within a week or two, but heavy or dirty jobs wait longer, and published sources give no fixed number.
No major patient education source publishes a return to work date for trabeculectomy, so treat any specific number you read as someone's local protocol rather than a standard.
What the sources do give you is the shape of the answer. The Glaucoma Research Foundation says most people can move around and return to normal activities soon after going home, but also says to avoid reading, bending, and heavy lifting, and that heavy lifting and strenuous activity should be avoided for at least one week. The American Academy of Ophthalmology says to avoid lifting, bending, or straining until your doctor clears you.
So a seated job with screens is usually the first thing that comes back, limited mostly by blurry vision, which the American Academy of Ophthalmology says can last several weeks. A job with lifting, straining, bending below the waist, dust, water, or chemical splash is a different question and needs an explicit clearance. Also plan around the visit schedule. EyeWiki describes visits every one to two weeks for the first two months, which is a lot of time out of a work week.
| When | Typical guidance |
|---|---|
| First week | Most people stay home. Frequent drops and a day one visit make work difficult. |
| Weeks 1 to 2 | Light desk work is often the first thing back, limited by blurry vision. |
| Weeks 2 to 8 | Heavy lifting, bending, and straining stay off limits until your doctor clears you per AAO. |
| Any time | Dusty, wet, or high splash environments need specific surgeon clearance because of bleb infection risk. |
